ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Diane Hobbs
The object of my work is to make the light shimmer in oil paints and to achieve a translucence by layering colors.
My mentor is Salvador Dali because of his great intellect and superb painting technique. After Dali come Monet for the quality of shimmering light in his work, Gauguin for design, and Rauschenberg for his creativeness and texture in contemporary work.
I have made the pilgrimage to Giverny, Monet's home and atelier and to the ateliers of Cezanne, Renoir, and Picasso. Whenever possible we return to France and look at art everywhere.
I am a charter member of The Women's Art Museum in Washington, D. C. and support the arts and view art as much as possible to further inspire my work and me.
In the past I have worked in almost every medium but oil remains my favorite. The intellectual process of my two series, "The Cross Series" and "Violence Towards Women," is very stimulating. However, reflections on water have always been a favorite theme, and I have always been ecstatic about flowers.
Making art is the only way to run away without leaving home and still listen to Rachmaninoff and Grieg.
"I only looked at what the universe showed me, to bear witness to it with my paintbrush."
-- Claude Monet
